Illustrations for Ylioppilaslehti magazine
Ylioppilaslehti magazine is the largest university student newspaper in Finland, with circulation of 35,000 copies. Ylioppilaslehti commissioned me and graphic designer / illustrator Noora Kyöstilä to create collaborative illustrations about current affairs and other interesting themes.
The illustrations were highly inspired by vintage toys, old stop motion animations and dioramas. The idea was to let the viewer recognise the topics behind the images mainly through the visual aids. The textual parts were usually only a few sentences long.
All the illustrations and elements used were planned in co-operation. We both crafted and painted the props featured in the illustrations, but generally I was in charge of creating the more complex sculpts, while Noora took care of doing the more demanding paint works. When the collage elements were finished, I photographed the images and Noora balanced the final compositions and colours.
